The
Voices of Angels...
Lizzie
Fisher is an ordinary girl with the most extraordinary gift.
She sees when people are about to die.
When
Lizzie Fisher sees a black mark above her teacher's head,
she has no idea how much it will change her life. Five days
later the teacher is dead and Lizzie must come to terms with
a frightening new ability: she sees when people are about
to die. After the death of her beloved pet dog, which she
is powerless to stop, Lizzie is heartbroken. ???? Sent to
Andalucia, to a house full of secrets and magic and a grandmother
she has never met, Lizzie discovers she is not alone. Gifted
musician Jake has the power to enter her dreams and, as time
goes by, her heart. All seems well until one day the black
mark appears above her own grandmother’s head. Horrified,
Lizzie finds herself in a race against time to find a portal
to a world where nothing ever dies. Can Jake help her? And
will they find the portal before it's too late?
The
Voices of Angels is my first novel and is a much
loved work in progress. It has already received huge interest
and success on the Harper Collins website, authonomy, a site
for writers to upload their novels and receive feedback from
their peers. There is also a rankings system in which the
top five rated books are submitted to the appropriate commissioning
editor at the end of each month. In November, The
Voices of Angels made the editor's desk at number
one.
It has
not yet been submitted to agents or publishers but through
authonomy an agent has requested the full manuscript when
completed. I can't wait to place this with an agent who cares
for it as much as I do and sees all its market potential.
My aim
with writing this book is to write a book which falls within
a recognisable genre (Young Adult) and to write something
which comes from the heart - something which mirrors my belief
systems. I'd like to create a book which will not only entertain,
but also inspire, touch and uplift people.
Here
are some of my favourite quotes from authonomy:
"
The Voice of Angels is a creepy novel with a very strong premise
and a great grasp of the paranormal".
Harper Collins
"The
subject matter, together with your brilliant story telling
skills, make this book a joy to read. I'm hungry for more.
Absolutely superb".
"I
was totally unprepared for how Lizzie's story would grip me!
I've just this minute finished reading and I can honestly
say that I believe it to be one of the best books I have ever
read. I believe that art should have the capacity to move
people in some way, be that through humour, sadness or just
general transcendent power"….
"It’s
clear that this novel has an extremely high amount of potential
at this point. An appeal for a wide audience.Hell, it’s
aimed at young adults but pulled in hundreds of thirty-somethings,
forty-somethings, FIFTY-somethings"…
"I'm
dying to know what will happen to Lizzie and what metaphysical
/ spiritual teachings will almost certainly lie within the
story - I adore anything supernatural, spiritual, life after
life etc, and was overjoyed to find this"!
"Really
amazing job! If I found this book in a store, it'd been one
of the ones coming home with me".
"Love
the story, love the characters, love the writing, and I just
plain enjoyed reading. Wish there were a hundred more chapters,
for I don't want this story to ever end".
"I
couldn't wait to start on your novel and am so glad I did!
It's FAB!!! I honestly can't find anything constructive to
say, other than I love it"!
"It's
effortless and very enjoyable reading this. Hemmingway would
have been proud of your very economic and controlled style".
"Lizzie
is becoming the perfect heroine - an outcast from the glittering
neon lights of 'normality' who has an unwanted secret ability
that further sets her outside of the bubble. You have captured
the feelings of insecurity that so blight most teenagers existences".
"I
think it's really on-trend and has great commercial potential.
There's a film in this, I reckon"!
"You
are a lovely story teller. Lizzie's childhood angst is very
similar to most children growing up: feeling different, unpopular,
even ugly. It appears to be a universal struggle as very few
grown up adults recall their childhoods as perfect. Lizzie's
struggle invites the reader to share in her journey".
"The
purpose of any spiritual writing is to facilitate an encounter
with God. The Voices of Angels certainly has the potential
to achieve that. There are plenty of soul-touching moments
and you've written one of the most evocative physical descriptions
of an angel I've read. (Up there with Isaiah 6 and CS Lewis'
Perelandra".)
"I
really enjoyed the story, you have all the right elements
for a page-turner, both for YA and adults alike. Your chapters
were just the right length and most had great endings, guaranteed
to keep a reader hooked. Your style was reminiscent of C S
Lewis, as was the story itself".
"An
inspired, intriguing, disturbing plot; a sympathetic young
protagonist, and a lovely use of language. You create some
beautiful metaphors while never overdoing it. And you made
me cry, only four chapters in"!
"I
can now see why all the hubbub...your eerie tale crackles
with suspense, a page-turner with a likable heroine who's
bound to capture the hearts of YA readers. Love the humor
and the creepies that it gives me! From the get-go, you had
me hooked. I'll be on the lookout for black marks"….
"This
is an amazing children's story. Your writing style sucks the
reader in and doesn't let go until the last word is read".
"Three
words describe your writing: clarity, wit and ORIGINALITY".
"Within
the first few paragraphs I could already feel a connection
with Lizzie. This was very much my persona throughout childhood
and adolescence, and reading it nearly brought me to tears".
"Hannah,
from the goosebumpy pitch I knew this was something special
and you didn't disappoint. Despite being in the YA genre,
this is one of those rare books with wider appeal, like I
Capture the Castle. As a child I would have identified with
Lizzie, although thankfully I never foretold death! You had
me intrigued from the first page, then I found it almost unbearably
sad, what with Lizzie's alienation and knowing Joopy would
get a black mark. For that reason I had to stop reading a
few times and come back. I mean that as a compliment - despite
being a softie, very few books move me".
"I
really admire your style. You write simply, yet evocatively,
and I'm very interested in seeing where this book is going.
I agree that there is significant young adult/adult crossover
potential for this book".
"I
loved it. It was awesome".
"Hannah,
what an amazing real engaging story! You manage to put together
sensitive themes with such care and humour. You gather teenage
feelings of inadequacy and fear with hints on how to turn
crisis into opportunities with ease and a deep sense of connection".
"This
is a beautifully crafted piece of writing. I completely became
enveloped in the world of your creation. This just hits all
the right buttons for the young adult age group. Like so many
good books, one just can't put them down and looks for excuses
not to do the chores or go to work or even speak to another
human being when so engrossed in this other world. You have
achieved that for me with your characterisation and storytelling
ability".
"I
don't think you'll have any problems getting this published.
I'd definitely buy it"!!
"Hannah,
this is outstanding. I've just had tears welling in my eyes
half-way through chapter 5, soft old sod that I am, so I am
making room on my bookshelf pronto. You handle your story
deftly, with an elegant use of language, capturing your characters
so effortlessly I am positively green with envy. Hell, I'd
buy it and I'm not even in your target demographic".
"The
premise is great and you handle it incredibly well. This age
is ripe for this kind of treatment - the sense of hovering
between two worlds, and you tap into that so well".
"This
book will appeal to people of faith and none - it’s
a gift being able to cross boundaries in this way".
"I
think this manuscript has a LOT of potential".
"I'm
not a YA specialist - but I do love Harry Potter, and I'm
not sure whether that will make you cringe or smile but there
are aspects of your writing as well as the story that remind
me of Rowling and the boy wizard. What you do effortlessly
is create a scene with a minimum amount of fuss or detail.
I could see the maths class and Mrs Froust. I could picture
Lizzie and feel her emotions when she heard of her teacher's
death. You carry the reader through with in an effortless
pace, I never felt bogged down by narrative or over wordiness,
which seems to be the biggest vulnerability of new writers
(myself included) Like I say I'm a 30+ reader. It captivated
and captured me. I think it would be perfect for your chosen
age range. You have a real gift".
"The
language slips through your mind as though it is hardly there
and yet at the same time it is poetic and descriptive. Lizzie
is a subtle but likeable character and Ariadne seems to be
her opposite, though even more likeable. The story itself
is so compelling I was devastated when the sample came to
an end. I desperately want more. I would highly recommend
this book to anyone else".
"This
is just outstanding. I don't know why it isn't published yet.
I don't know why it isn't a best-seller yet. It will be".
